LEED v5 draft from the US Green Building Council doubles down on decarbonization

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has unveiled a draft of the fifth edition of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, focusing on the operations and maintenance of existing buildings. This LEED v5 draft introduces new requirements to enhance climate resilience, evaluate social impact, and reduce emissions, including embodied carbon, refrigerants, and transportation-related emissions. The proposal encourages existing LEED-certified buildings to assess and reduce their carbon footprint while promoting decarbonization targets and ultra-low greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, LEED v5 addresses indoor air quality, equity in cleaning operations, and preparedness for extreme weather events. This initiative aligns with the USGBC's goal to support carbon reduction efforts and aligns with federal zero-emissions building standards. The USGBC plans to release a rating system draft report for building design and construction in the near future.
