While we stayed in Reykjavik, we visited this geothermal power plant and learn about how they use superheated underground water to create heat and energy. Well they’re most impressive fact that they like to tell tourists is that that one plant alone produces enough heat through the water to space heat 90% of Icelandic homes and the energy is enough to power 30% of Iceland. They’re method of capture as one might expect is to drill nearly 400 meters down to pockets of water that have been heated to hundreds of degrees celcius but haven’t been allowed to boil due to the pressure on it from the rocks above. The second that drill reaches these pockets the pressure is released so some of the water instantly boils and rushes to the surface. The force of this new steam is used to spin turbines to create energy. And the water, once it condenses, is used for space heating. The process was fascinating for me and I thought cool enough to share with you all. Anyways that’s it I’ll update more later.
