https://climate.mit.edu/explainers/concrete Concrete is the most widely used construction material globally, accounting for around 8% of the world's carbon emissions. Its production process generates carbon dioxide, and the hardening of concrete results in a chemical reaction that also releases carbon dioxide. However, researchers are developing ways to reduce concrete's environmental impact, such as using alternative cement materials, incorporating recycled materials, and developing new methods for capturing and storing carbon emissions. Some promising solutions include using volcanic ash, fly ash, and slag as cement replacements, incorporating waste plastic and glass into concrete, and using carbon capture and storage technologies to capture and store carbon emissions from the production process.
